Spa stay review: Feversham Arms Hotel and Verbena Spa

This spa was a first for me as it had an outdoor swimming pool. Braving the cold to go for a dip in the UK in the middle of January was invigorating, to say the least, but once submerged there’s something quite magical about swimming in a warmed pool with the wild Yorkshire weather whipping in around you. It felt akin to a spot of wild swimming minus the algae and with added heat! I can imagine in the summer when the trees have blossomed and the patio furniture has undergone a good power wash, it’d be be quite idyllic.

After enjoying a brisk swim in the quiet pool, I headed indoors to the spa area for a spot of sauna and steam room action. The spa itself is rather compact (but perfectly formed) and as most people wanted to stay out of the cold, it was a little crowded. However, I managed to find a peg for my robe and experience all that was on offer, including the steam room, sauna, experience shower and foot spa. Once again, when the weather picks up, more people will venture to the outside terrace and pool area, leaving a bit more wiggle room in the bijoux spa.

A refreshing experience with instant, lasting results

I was soon called in for my Power Breakfast facial, which was 30-minutes of pure bliss. My lovely therapist started by cleansing my face and buffing away the dead skin. She then smothered me in a moisturising and hydrating mask and covered my eyes with a soft, warm eye-pillow. Finally, I was treated to a relaxing scalp and shoulder massage while my mask got to work. Afterwards my skin was glowing and felt so soft and smooth. I looked naturally brighter and my makeup seemed easier to apply.

Fine dining

I enjoyed a three-course meal in the restaurant that evening, tucking into creamy onion and parmesan soup to start, tender beef loin and mashed potato for the main and devouring a slice of coconut cake topped with edible flowers for dessert. The portions were small but beautifully formed and I left feeling full, but not uncomfortable – perfect! Back at my recently refurbished, spacious room, I kicked back on the snuggly sofa and enjoyed a nightcap while overlooking the dimly lit pool. It was the perfect way to end my day.

Other USPs (unique spa points!)

Beautiful location: As a Yorkshire lass you’ll have to forgive my bias, but the Yorkshire Dales is a particularly beautiful part of the world. Helmsley is a quaint, picturesque little market town with plenty to see and do if you fancy venturing out of the hotel.

Newly refurbished: Some parts of the hotel have undergone a bit of a makeover of late, including the spa suite rooms, so everything felt very clean and crisp.

Lovely staff: The staff, particularly the restaurant staff, were so helpful and friendly, I loved having a chat with them at dinner.
