22. Practice gratitude

“When we’re grateful for what we DO have, we tend to forget about what we don’t have,” says author of Inspiring Leadership for Uncertain Times (from £21.75), Karlin Sloan. “Sometimes it is a question of identifying what you need to give up on, but most of all, remember that, like all the challenges you have already been through and overcome in life, this too shall pass!”

23. It’s good to talk

“Many couples lose the ability to express their feelings about the relationship, and that’s when the irritation and resentments fester,” says Neil Wilkie, who created the online therapy platform, The Relationship Paradigm. “Try to set aside an hour a week and take turns to talk about five things that have gone well in the relationship in the last week and one thing that could be better. Use the language of ‘I feel’ rather than blaming.”

24. Get regular!

“Staying regular – both for your bowels and your daily habits – makes a big difference,” says Dr Sunni Patel, who hosts celebrity cookalongs on his Instagram @dishdashdeets. “Keeping a regular pattern and schedule for eating, exercising, working and breaks may sound boring, but it will help to keep your gut health, mood, physical health and bowels in check and you will feel amazing for it!”

25. Watch more movies

“Don’t feel guilty about taking time out to just watch an uplifting film, such as Yes Man, The Pursuit of Happyness, Eat Pray Love, I Don’t Know How She Does It, The Bucket List, or another one of your choice. Make movie watching a therapeutic, uplifting, me-time activity,” says author of May the Source Be with You: A Filmic Guide to Change Your Life (£12.68), Dawud Gurevitch.

26. Punch the air and shout ‘Yes!’

Body confidence expert Astrid Longhurst challenges you to try this for a day: “After everything you do, punch the air and shout out “YES!” Do this for everything – the good stuff and the not so good stuff. It teaches the mind to celebrate the fact that you’re taking action!”

27. Smile for Serotonin

“Serotonin – the ‘happy hormone’ – influences levels of happiness and wellbeing. Smiling and laughing release serotonin in ourselves and others (if we smile at them),” says Physical Intelligence (£11.99) co-author, Patricia Peyton. “Try smiling at yourself in the mirror as you brush your teeth or as you pass a stranger on the street. You’ll immediately feel a little boost.”

28. See the world through the eyes of others

Host of the popular Empathy for Breakfast show, Mimi Nicklin believes this could be the year we find happiness by understanding others better: “Empathising with others connects the joy neurons in our brain so it not only makes the other people feel heard and valued but it makes you feel happier too. Empathy for the win in 2021!”

29. Choose your thoughts

“You are the window through which you see the world,” says Lianna Champ, grief and loss counsellor and author of How to Grieve Like A Champ (£8.45). “Think love. When you look in the mirror each morning, choose to like what you see.”

30. It’s ok to not feel ok

“Changing everything into a positive can actually be detrimental to your mental wellbeing, if you are doing it to avoid your feelings. It’s okay not to feel okay. Feeling emotion can actually be good for you short term – just follow up with positive action and you will feel so much better for taking that first step,” says NLP and Hypnotherapy Master Practitioner, Nicky Taylor.

31. Notice what energises you

Finally, psychologist Sarah Rozenthuler advises that we’re all different so when we try these different things, we should pay attention to what energises you: “Notice which activities, people and conversations create a buzz. Make room for more of these. Turn away from what feels draining, including people who zap your energy. What you focus on, expands.”
