The festive season is a time for celebration and gathering around the dinner table with friends and family – however, Christmas and New Year festivities can also bring the unwelcome side effects of heartburn and acid reflux.

Rich foods, large meals, alcohol, late nights, and the stress of preparation can cause or make these uncomfortable symptoms worse. And there appears to be temptation at every turn! What you don’t want is for heartburn to get in the way of your festive celebrations, be it the office party, Christmas dinner or one of the obligatory buffets that seem to go hand in hand with this time of year.

While you may have to exercise a more cautious approach to the festive season as a heartburn sufferer, you certainly don’t have to miss out. Here are some tips and advice from Pyrocalm to help minimise the risk of heartburn while making the most of this very merry season.

5 tips to manage heartburn

  1. Christmas dining is often a lavish spread of rich and fatty foods – well known heartburn culprits. Opt for lean meat – turkey is a good choice as long as it’s not basted in butter. And try to resist too many tempting trimmings, instead filling up on delicious seasonal veggies.
  2. We can be guilty of over-eating at Christmas but large meals really can be a recipe for heartburn. Instead of overloading your plate, try smaller, more frequent meals.
  3. While it’s tempting to indulge in Christmas cocktails and fizz, moderation is key. Alcohol can
relax the muscular ring between the stomach and the gullet allowing acid to pass through.
  4. Is there such a thing as reflux-friendly fashion? Well, yes! Go for something comfortable and loose fitting
that isn’t tight round the waist.
  5. Christmas parties often involve late-night snacking, but eating too close to bedtime can cause symptoms to flare up while you’re lying down so try not to eat three to four hours before going to bed.

If you have heartburn most days and lifestyle changes aren’t helping, speak to your GP or pharmacist who may recommend a treatment such as omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) which reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes.
