Editor-in-Chief Katy Sunnassee pays a visit to one of London’s best-kept secrets when it comes to the ultimate night’s sleep…

In a city that rarely switches off, finding genuinely restorative sleep can feel like the ultimate luxury. During my recent stay at Eccleston Square Hotel, tucked behind the elegant white stucco of Belgravia, I discovered a place that doesn’t just promise good sleep – it has quietly perfected it.

AT A GLANCE

A boutique London hotel designed around exceptional sleep, featuring Hästens adjustable massage beds in every room, outstanding soundproofing, blackout technology, temperature-controlled rooms and a peaceful Belgravia setting overlooking private gardens.

From the moment I arrived, calm was the overriding feeling. Set across two Grade II-listed Georgian townhouses overlooking a private residents’ garden (which you can use during your stay), the hotel feels gently cocooned from the bustle of nearby Victoria.

Despite being just minutes from a major transport hub, I was struck by how still and hushed everything felt. Traffic noise faded away almost instantly, replaced by a rare sense of quiet that immediately signalled rest.

Sleep here isn’t an afterthought – it’s the main event. Every room, including mine, is fitted with a handcrafted Swedish Hästens electronically adjustable massage bed.

These are widely regarded as some of the finest beds in the world, retailing at more than £30,000, and handmade using layers of natural materials including horsehair, wool, cotton, flax and pine.

The difference was noticeable from the first night. The bed supported my body without feeling rigid, and crucially, it stayed at a comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Horsehair has natural anti-wick properties, allowing air to circulate freely, which meant no overheating and far fewer restless moments. As someone who usually wakes at least once during the night in hotels, I slept deeply and consistently.

The bed itself is fully customisable. Using a discreet remote, I could elevate my legs, adjust the upper body or activate a gentle massage function designed to ease tension before sleep.

It felt less like settling into a hotel bed and more like easing into a personalised sleep treatment – something I’ve rarely experienced outside of dedicated wellness retreats.

The room design reinforced this sense of sanctuary. SmartGlass bathroom walls could be switched from transparent to opaque for privacy. Electronic blackout curtains closed silently, and excellent soundproofing ensured uninterrupted rest.

Even the room temperature felt perfectly calibrated, thanks to a highly advanced building management system working quietly in the background.

A dream escape

Technology is present – Apple TV with Sonos soundbar, intuitive lighting controls and ultra-fast WiFi were all there in the room when I wanted them, but nothing intruded on the calm.

My room also overlooked the leafy private garden, and waking to birdsong rather than sirens felt almost surreal for central London. The marble bathroom was stocked with L’Occitane amenities, including a pillow mist that subtly reinforced the hotel’s sleep-first philosophy.

The location also adds to the experience. Elizabeth Street’s boutiques and cafés are just moments away, while the growing wellness hub of Eccleston Yards is a short walk.

I liked that I could easily pair exceptional sleep with yoga, Pilates or bodywork nearby, creating my own version of an urban retreat without committing to a rigid programme.

What I appreciated most about Eccleston Square Hotel is that it doesn’t shout about wellness. There are no schedules, no prescriptive routines and no pressure to optimise every moment.

Instead, it quietly removes the barriers to good sleep – noise, light, discomfort and temperature disruption – and lets your body do the rest. In a world of constant stimulation, Eccleston Square Hotel feels like luxury redefined.

Not flashy or performative, but deeply restorative. I left feeling genuinely rested – something that rarely happens after a city break. I’d definitely return next time I want to stay in the capital.
