Royal biographer Catherine Mayer reveals why the standard of “perfection” placed on the Princess of Wales comes with a unique, relentless price tag.

From the outside, the life of Kate Middleton appears to be a picture-perfect fairytale. Between glamorous public appearances, high-profile charitable initiatives, and raising a young family—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—alongside Prince William, the Princess of Wales carries out her public duties with seamless grace.
However, behind the polished facade lies an intense, unavoidable pressure.
In her latest book, Divide and Rule: Royal Women and Their Battles, author and royal biographer Catherine Mayer sheds light on the unspoken burdens placed on senior female royals. By examining the shared and distinct experiences of Princess Kate, Meghan Markle, Queen Camilla, Princess Diana, and Queen Elizabeth II, Mayer reveals why the scrutiny Princess Kate faces today is a particularly demanding version of global fame.
The Trap of Projected Perfection
Since marrying Prince William at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011, and becoming a senior member of the Royal Family, Princess Kate has spent years mastering the art of performing royal duties under a relentless spotlight. As well as undertaking official engagements in support of The King, both across the United Kingdom and overseas, she devotes a significant amount of her time to supporting charitable causes and grassroots organizations.
Yet, as Mayer explains, the expectations placed on Kate extend far beyond delivering speeches, cutting ribbons, or attending state ceremonies. The real, unspoken challenge comes from society’s demand for absolute, flawless behavior at every single moment.

“She is human and the projection on to her of perfection adds to the burdens she already carries as one of the most famous women in the world,” Mayer told Marie Claire.
Unlike standard Hollywood celebrities or international stars who can step out of the public eye or retreat into private life when the attention becomes overwhelming, royal women simply do not have the luxury of hiding away. Visibility is not just a byproduct of their fame—it is the core function of their official role.
“And that scrutiny is worse for royal women because it is their job to be seen,” Mayer noted.

Marriage, Bodies, and the Survival of the Monarchy
In Divide and Rule, Mayer explores a distinct and deeply uncomfortable complication that sets female royals apart from almost any other famous figures on the planet: the very survival of the centuries-old institution depends directly on their personal lives.
For the British Royal Family to endure across generations, new people must continually join its ranks. Because this expansion happens primarily through marriage and childbirth, the public and the media often feel an implicit permission to examine the most intimate details of these women’s lives.
“Not only that, but the only way the monarchy continues to exist or recruits new members is through marriage and reproduction. That appears to legitimize a closer interest in their love lives and bodies than other famous women endure. And such scrutiny is always worse for famous women than famous men,” explains Mayer.
This dynamic creates a double standard. While male royals certainly face public attention, the focus on female royals—specifically regarding their physical appearance, their relationships, their choices as mothers, and their aging—is vastly more intense. Their bodies become subjects of national debate, framed around the continuity of the crown itself.
Embracing the Future Under the Spotlight
Despite the relentless focus on her appearance, relationships, and everyday actions, Mayer’s analysis does not suggest that Princess Kate is looking to step back from her duties or escape royal life. Instead, the Princess of Wales appears to be navigating this unprecedented level of attention with a calm, forward-looking focus.
As Prince William moves closer to the throne, Kate’s responsibilities continue to grow. Balancing the demands of a high-stakes public role while raising the next generation of royals is a daunting task, yet she continues to adapt to her evolving position.
Her royal life may always look enviable and glamorous from afar, but it remains permanently coupled with constant attention and endless public judgment. Even so, Princess Kate is steadily finding her footing, firmly focused on supporting her family and shaping the future of the British monarchy.
