Now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are back in the UK, there is no longer anywhere for Prince William to hide from the heartbreaking rift that has torn the Royal Family apart.

Prince William may be facing the prospect of coming face-to-face with Prince Harry for the first time in four years, amid reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are settling back into life in Britain.

Avoiding an awkward reunion was easier when Harry and Meghan lived thousands of miles away in California. But if the Sussexes spend more time here with Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, William will struggle to keep his younger brother at arm’s length.

Prince William is ‘still very angry’

An insider told Heat that William is flatly refusing to ‘make nice’ with Harry, 41, and Meghan and cannot understand why other members of the Royal Family appear willing to entertain the prospect of welcoming them back.

The source says, ‘William is still very angry. The fact that his brother is back and getting all sorts of special attention has left him completely stunned; he feels like everyone suddenly has amnesia.

‘He’s vowing that he won’t be taken in by Harry and Meghan’s manipulations and says he plans to stay as far away from them as possible.

‘Harry says he’s tried forcing himself to make nice before and it was unbearable. He always goes back to that terribly painful walkabout the four of them had to do together after the Queen’s death. He hated every second of it and was thunder-faced the entire time, and that was before Harry released his memoir and everything deteriorated even further.’

William, Kate, Harry and Meghan made a surprise joint appearance outside Windsor Castle following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022. Although the couples greeted mourners and viewed floral tributes together, relations between the once-dubbed ‘Fab Four’ appeared visibly strained.

King Charles faces a Christmas dilemma

While William reportedly remains resolute, King Charles, 77, appears more open to bringing his younger son and daughter-in-law back into the fold. Reports of a private meeting at Highgrove House have fuelled speculation that the King is prepared to rebuild bridges.

As Christmas approaches, this creates a painful dilemma over who will be invited to Sandringham. Harry and Meghan are not working royals, but Charles is said to want all his grandchildren together.

William, however, is reportedly prepared to pull out of the celebrations rather than endure an awkward reunion.

‘It’s assumed that Harry and Meghan will be invited to all the Christmas functions, even though they’re not working royals they are still family and the King wants them to have a place at the table. But William can’t accept that, he feels like they lost that privilege with all their despicable behaviour and he’s saying he will opt out of attending anything they are invited to, rather than have to put on some phony act,’ The Insider told Heat.

‘People are telling him that he needs to swallow his pride and give this a chance but he’s adamant that he’d rather spend Christmas alone than face those two across the table. There are still plenty of people hoping that William will be persuaded to turn the other cheek for his father’s sake, but at the moment he isn’t budging.’

Prince William is torn between his father and brother

The situation is made more heartbreaking by the King’s health. As Charles continues to undergo cancer treatment, leaving William caught between his loyalty and love for his father and his anger over Harry’s actions.

Palace insiders hope William’s threat is an attempt to exert control over the guest list, rather than a genuine intention to abandon the festivities with his ill father.

‘There’s a huge debate raging behind the scenes over what Christmas is actually going to look like. Sandringham is such an established tradition that it would be absolutely unprecedented for William to deliberately skip the festivities, particularly given everything Charles is going through with his health. A lot of people are in disbelief that he would really take it that far,’ the source said.

‘The hope is that this is just William’s way of trying to exert some control and potentially put a block on Harry and Meghan’s invitation before anything is finalised.’

‘It’s me or Harry’

Despite those hopes, William is said to believe the relationship has become more damaged, not less, since he and Harry were last seen together.

His reported ultimatum to the family is brutally simple: ‘It’s me or Harry.’

The source says, ‘He swears he’s deadly serious. As far as William is concerned, there’s far more bad blood now, not less, so the idea that he should suddenly be able to sit around a Christmas table and pretend everything is fine is totally unrealistic.

‘He says he’s entitled to decide whether he wants to participate and, at this point, he’s still adamant that he’s not willing to sit there making nice with Harry when the relationship has become so damaged. He doesn’t want a load of tension overshadowing Christmas.’

Could the Waleses spend Christmas with Kate’s family?

William and Kate may have one way to avoid a public showdown. The couple last celebrated Christmas with Kate’s family in 2016, meaning they could reasonably decide that, after a decade, it is time to spend the festive period with the Middletons again.

There is also speculation that Harry and Meghan could return to the US to celebrate with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, removing the immediate threat of an uncomfortable Sandringham encounter.

But even if the brothers avoid one another this Christmas, the bigger problem remains. William may no longer be able to rely on distance to keep the rift behind palace walls.

For Charles, the prospect of choosing between his sons during his cancer treatment will be deeply painful. Yet William’s wounds are said to remain too raw for reconciliation, leaving another royal Christmas overshadowed by a feud showing no sign of ending.
