We’ve all had those mornings when the alarm goes off far too soon and eight hours of sleep feels like a distant dream. While you can’t always catch up on lost rest, you can make your skin look as though you have.

A lack of sleep often shows up on our faces first, leaving skin looking puffy, dehydrated and lacking its usual glow. But according to skincare experts, piling on heavy make-up isn’t the answer.

“One of the biggest misconceptions is that make-up alone can make us look well-rested,” says celebrity facialist William Foley. “But healthy, hydrated and luminous skin often does far more to soften the visible signs of fatigue than layers of heavy coverage.”

Instead of masking tired skin, the experts recommend giving it exactly what it needs: hydration, nourishment and a little extra care.

Here are their top tips for looking refreshed – even after a restless night.

Revive tired eyes

The delicate eye area is usually the first place to reveal a lack of sleep, making it the perfect place to focus your efforts.

“A cooling gel texture can be incredibly effective,” says Anabel Kindersley, CEO and co-owner of Neal’s Yard Remedies. “Neal’s Yard Reviving White Tea Eye Gel (£24.99) feels instantly refreshing on application. Keep it in the fridge and apply it gently with light tapping motions, allowing the product to do the work of de-puffing and re-energising the under-eye area. It’s also brilliant after a long day or before an important meeting.”

Another simple trick is to use a chilled eye mask or cool compress for five to 10 minutes. The cooling effect helps temporarily reduce puffiness while making your eyes feel instantly more awake.

For those looking for longer-term results, renowned aesthetic specialist Dr Hany Abi Ghosn recommends the Omnilux Eye Brightener (£96). The at-home medical-grade LED device is designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, boost skin elasticity and reduce under-eye puffiness with regular use.

Drench your skin with hydration

When skin is tired, it often looks dull because it’s dehydrated. Rather than layering on more make-up, start with skincare that replenishes moisture.

“Before anything else, I always prep tired skin with an essence,” says Anabel. “This light, revitalising layer of hydration sinks in instantly and gives everything that follows something to hold onto. It’s a step people often skip, but it’s the one that makes the biggest difference. Skin that’s properly hydrated catches the light naturally, helping the complexion look healthier and more radiant.”

We love Round Lab’s Soybean Nourishing Toner (£20 for 300ml), which is packed with ceramides and adenosine to deeply nourish the skin while helping to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Facial oils can also work wonders. “Oils such as jojoba, rosehip, sweet almond and evening primrose help nourish the skin, leaving it softer, calmer and noticeably more luminous,” says William.

Wake up your complexion with massage

If your skin is looking flat or lifeless, a quick facial massage can make a surprising difference.

“When we’re tired, boosting circulation can transform how skin looks and feels,” explains Anabel. “A gentle facial massage using your hands or a gua sha tool – even for just a minute or two – can bring back colour and life to the complexion.”

Massage also encourages lymphatic drainage, helping to reduce puffiness while giving skin a naturally healthy glow.

“Touch is one of the most underestimated tools we have in skincare,” William adds. “Taking a few moments to slowly massage your cleanser or facial oil into the skin encourages circulation and transforms a rushed routine into a relaxing ritual.”

Lock everything in

William recommends finishing your routine with a nourishing moisturiser to strengthen the skin barrier and seal in hydration. Follow with a broad-spectrum SPF every morning to protect against environmental damage, which can make tired skin appear even duller.

We love Medicube’s PDRN Pink Collagen Capsule Cream (£29 for 55g), which features innovative pink PDRN capsules that burst on contact with the skin, releasing active ingredients to help boost brightness, improve firmness and deliver lasting hydration.

Anabel says, “While nothing truly replaces a good night’s sleep, a few clever skincare tricks can leave your complexion looking brighter, fresher and far more rested than you feel.”
