At Rio Perdido, wellness comes straight from nature. Writer Mars Webb discovers thermal rivers, volcanic mud rituals and forest meditation hidden deep within a lush Costa Rican canyon.

Hidden within a volcanic canyon in the Guanacaste region, Rio Perdido feels a world away from the coast. Set within a 1,500-acre private reserve, the hotel sits quietly among the trees, with trails leading through the forest to a warm mineral river that runs through the centre of the property.

There is plenty to explore here. More than 30 kilometres of trails wind through the forest, leading to viewpoints, quiet riverbanks and pockets of wildlife where monkeys and birds move freely through the trees. But it’s the thermal river and spa that quickly becomes the focus.

A spa shaped by nature

At the heart of Rio Perdido is its geothermal river, where naturally heated mineral water flows through the canyon, forming a series of pools along the riverbed. Guests can move between these pools or use the nearby thermal baths, designed for hot and cold hydrotherapy.

Thermal water is naturally heated underground by volcanic activity, rising through mineral-rich rock before reaching the surface. For centuries, it has been used to support relaxation, circulation and recovery. The river itself is the spa.

The thermal river

Known as the “lost river”, Rio Perdido flows through the canyon, creating dozens of warm, mineral-rich pools along the gorge.

Each pool varies slightly in temperature and depth. Some are warmer, some cooler, encouraging you to slowly move between them.

Stepping into the water feels surprisingly natural. It’s warm, close to body temperature, with smooth stones shifting underfoot as you move deeper. Because the water is constantly flowing, it feels very different from a traditional spa pool, more dynamic and more connected to the landscape around you.

Further along, the river leads to the mud bathing area. Here, volcanic clay is smoothed over the skin before being left to dry in the heat of the canyon, then rinsed away in the river.

Rich in minerals including magnesium, silica and sulphur, the mud helps gently exfoliate the skin while the warmth of the water supports circulation, leaving skin feeling smoother and refreshed.

Meditation in the river

One of the most memorable experiences happens early in the morning.

We follow Metzi, the resort’s yoga and meditation teacher, along a narrow forest trail towards the river. The path opens onto a quiet stretch of warm water, surrounded by trees and volcanic rock.

Stepping into the river, the shift is immediate. The warmth softens the body, while the gentle current keeps you present.

Standing waist-deep in the water, we’re guided through simple breathwork, focusing on a fixed point ahead. Breathing becomes slower and more deliberate.

Metzi moves between us, applying a blend of essential oils made from herbs grown in the resort’s mandala garden. Rosemary, lavender, geranium and orange create a scent that feels both grounding and uplifting.

As the session deepens, soft chanting echoes against the canyon walls, blending with birdsong overhead. In the distance, howler monkeys call through the forest.

The combination of warm water, filtered light through the trees, scent, sound and breath creates a full sensory experience that feels deeply calming. It’s less about doing and more about being present.

Aromatherapy and stillness

Back at the spa, treatments bring a more personalised layer to the experience.

Before the massage begins, oils are blended using ingredients from the on-site garden. The scent is calming without feeling heavy.

The treatment rooms are open to the elements, with a gentle breeze moving through the space and the sounds of the forest always nearby.

The massage itself is slow and intuitive, focusing on releasing tension without feeling overly clinical.

By the end, it’s not just relaxation you feel, but a real sense of balance.

Immersed in the landscape

What makes Rio Perdido stand out is how seamlessly it sits within its surroundings.

During an early morning walk, we climb to a viewpoint high above the canyon. From the top, the forest stretches endlessly, and it takes a moment to spot the hotel at all.

That same sense of immersion continues throughout the stay. Wildlife, warm air and the sounds of the forest remain constant, even during quieter moments.

Even the rooms reflect this connection. Built with volcanic materials and soft lighting, they feel cocooned and calm and very luxurious and sitting outside on the balcony in nature listening to the monkeys jump from tree to tree or call for each other is wonderful.

Food follows the same philosophy. Much of it is sourced locally or grown on-site in the mandala garden, where more than 50 medicinal herbs and plants are cultivated. Dishes are fresh, simple and nourishing, without feeling restrictive.

Why it works

Rio Perdido isn’t about complicated wellness routines or high-tech treatments. Instead, it focuses on the basics — heat, water, movement and rest — and does them exceptionally well.

The combination of thermal bathing, fresh air and being so close and immersed in nature is wonderful.

The staff at Rio Perdido are warm, and everyone is so happy and passionate about the hotel; it is very special indeed.

Rooms at Rio Perdido start from £350 per night, depending on the season.
