The wide world of facial aesthetics is growing at breakneck speed. Every week seems to bring a new miracle treatment promising tighter skin, fewer wrinkles and that elusive “glow”.

But for many women, the question is: what actually works rather than what’s new? I wasn’t aiming to look 15 years younger; I simply wanted to look fresher, healthier and more like the best version of myself. I had reached the point where I wanted to improve the quality of my skin, soften some wrinkles and dispose of others if possible, without ending up looking like a different person.

Uncovering my skin’s unique needs

I set out to find a bespoke progressive facial programme, one that felt intelligent, tailored and realistic. Oh, and ideally, a treatment plan that wouldn’t send my credit card into cardiac arrest or feel unsustainable long term.

Having interviewed many women over the years about facials and aesthetic treatments, too often the experience seemed to involve a standard facial, little real understanding of the individual’s skin needs, an intimidating clinic culture and a strong focus on the sales pitch at the end.

So, I was heartened when I was recommended to Vanity Lab London (vanitylablondon.co.uk), located in suburban Beckenham, Kent, and also practising in Harley Street, London. Harley Street may carry a certain gold stamp of approval, but Beckenham felt more welcoming and less likely to make me feel I ought to apologise for aging.

Through the glass doors, it’s stylish in pink and chrome, and compact with a smiley, friendly and professional team. Importantly, it did not feel like somewhere trying to sell me a face I did not ask for. My journey began with a consultation covering medical history, personal concerns and what I hoped to achieve.

Combined with the Observ Skin Analysis Scanner, which assessed my skin’s levels of inflammation, pigmentation and dehydration, a bespoke programme was prescribed. Each stage of the plan, over the course of 18 months, was discussed in detail and could be adjusted depending on how my skin responded. Reassuringly, nothing started immediately.

I was given time and encouraged to think before going ahead. The programme began with three bespoke facials, including laser light to reduce redness, thread veins and hyperpigmentation, a skin peel to remove dead cells, and suction, used in the HydraFacial, which I can only describe as a very efficient sort of facial hoovering.

This was followed by medical-grade red LED light for anti-aging collagen stimulation. It was a sensible beginning. Rather than rushing straight into injectables, the focus was first on improving the condition of the skin itself. By this stage, I could already see a difference. My skin looked brighter, clearer and calmer, with a fresher quality that no amount of expensive moisturiser had ever quite managed to produce.

Restoring structure

As the programme progressed, I then had a cheek filler to improve facial symmetry, followed by three treatments of Sculptra, which proved to be the icing on the cake. Sculptra is a bio-stimulatory injectable treatment that stimulates the natural collagen production over time. As we age, collagen declines steadily, contributing to fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and loss of structure.

Unlike traditional fillers, Sculptra works gradually, helping to restore, support and improve skin quality from within, a process that is regenerative rather than a camouflage. Lucy McGeough, owner of Vanity Lab, endorses this particular treatment.

‘Trends come and go but Sculptra has remained popular as clients lean into treatments that work with their natural biological make-up,’ she explains. ‘Sculptra has the ability to stimulate collagen gradually, restoring structure and skin quality over time rather than masking aging. The results are more subtle, regenerative and natural: a fresher overall look, not altered. Patients today are seeking longevity and authenticity.’

My finale included two fractional laser treatments on the face and neck. Fractional laser is a non-ablative procedure that resurfaces the skin to boost collagen through controlled micro-injuries. It’s a deep resurfacing treatment that works not only on the surface but into the mid-dermis too.

Admittedly, this was slightly more uncomfortable, with a day’s downtime, and the point at which I felt least inclined to book lunch in public. But it was worth it, as in the weeks that followed my skin gradually looked fresher and more refined, with the glow finally making a welcome appearance.

The results

My verdict? A friendly and honest clinic that genuinely personalised my journey and my investment in order to improve my look naturally and help me feel the best I can at the age I am.

A number of wrinkle lines have been smoothed away, others softened, my jawline is more defined, pore size reduced and, importantly, there is still that radiant glow. I still look exactly like myself, only fresher, better rested and less as though I had been left crumpled overnight in a linen cupboard.

What this experience confirmed for me is that one treatment or product does not suit us all. Each of us has our own skin requirements, shaped by DNA, hormones, health and lifestyle. For me, Vanity Lab offered a professional, caring and bespoke approach to healthy facial aging that felt thoughtful rather than transactional, and natural rather than overdone.
