It’s not only teenagers who suffer from acne – midlife can bring its own hormonal storm leading to spots. We look at some innovative new ways to treat acne in menopause, as well as how to prevent it

Acne is something most women experience at some point in their lives. Although we mainly hear about it affecting teenagers, acne can occur in adulthood and especially in menopause as hormones fluctuate. Now, with technology leaping and bounding ahead, there are ways to test for it genetically so you can get a personalised treatment plan.
Aesthetics practitioner Dr Raquel Amado (skinandmedicalcosmetics.co.uk) is one such consultant helping patients get clearer skin at every age thanks to genetic testing. The results help her gain personalised insights that help identify underlying causes of acne. ‘We analyse a patient’s unique genetic profile, which gives me detailed understanding of their genetic make-up. From there, I can design a treatment plan tailored to that client’s needs, thereby increasing the likelihood of treatment success while minimising risks of adverse reactions,’ says Dr Amado.
Genetic testing involves analysing a person’s DNA to identify genetic variations associated with acne. These tests can reveal predispositions to these conditions and help in understanding the specific pathways involved in their development. Dr Amado says: ‘By pinpointing the genetic factors that contribute to acne we can identify the medications most likely to be effective. For instance, certain genetic variations might indicate a better response to retinoids, which help to reduce inflammation and promote skin cell turnover. Other genetic markers might suggest that antibiotics, which target bacterial infection and inflammation, would be more effective.
‘This precision in medication selection ensures patients receive the most suitable and effective treatment, reducing the time and frustration often associated with the trial-and-error approach to dermatological care.’
By detecting genetic predispositions early, Dr. Amado can implement proactive treatments, significantly reducing or preventing severe symptoms. For example, early use of topical retinoids or oral medications can effectively manage skin health. But if you can’t or don’t want to explore genetic testing, there are other practical steps you can take both at home and in clinics…

All ages
‘Acne isn’t just a teenage problem – it affects women of all ages, from hormonal fluctuations in your 20s to stress and lifestyle changes in your 30s and beyond,’ says Elena Cudworth skin expert and owner of Elenique Skin Clinic in Fulham, London (eleniqueaesthetics.co.uk). ‘Understanding the different types of acne is key to finding the right treatment for your skin. The most common types in women and the one I am asked about most often is hormonal acne, often seen around the chin and jawline, and comedonal acne, which manifests as blackheads and whiteheads,’ says Elena. ‘Inflammatory acne, including painful papules and pustules, is also common. Whether you’re dealing with stubborn breakouts or acne scars, the good news is there are plenty of solutions to help you regain clear, healthy skin.’
‘The biggest factor in a healthy skincare regime to beat acne is consistency,’ says Elena. ‘Consistently following a routine that includes gentle cleansing, targeted treatments, and moisturising helps maintain clear skin over time. Proper cleansing removes excess oil, dirt, and make-up that can clog pores, while using non-comedogenic products ensures your skin isn’t further irritated.’
She advises incorporating acne-fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or retinoids into your beauty routine to help treat and prevent breakouts. ‘Additionally, hydration is key. Moisturising ensures that the skin doesn’t become overly dry or irritated, which can trigger more acne. A consistent, balanced approach is essential to long-term success in managing and preventing acne.’
One of the most popular acne treatments Elena offers at her London-based clinic is the Clear and Brilliant Laser (from £400), which
is a non-invasive treatment using fractional laser technology to stimulate collagen production and skin regeneration, reduce pore size and pigmentation, and smooth the skin’s texture. ‘It requires minimal downtime, allowing clients to return to normal activities quickly and is ideal for those with acne scars,’ says Elena. ‘Laser treatments are beneficial for inflamed acne, as they target pigmentation and scarring while promoting skin healing. Combining this with the right skincare at home is an effective way to minimise acne, although results won’t come overnight as it takes time for skin to heal,’ she adds, recommending at least four sessions for optimal results.#Skin looking dull? A combined approach
Acne develops when sebaceous glands become overactive, pores become clogged with dead skin cells and bacteria proliferate. Inflammation is the common denominator, which can often be worsened by hormonal fluctuations, lifestyle factors and improper skincare routines. ‘Acne-prone skin is typically oily, reactive and may also present with dehydration, congestion and a compromised barrier. Effective treatment must consider all of these elements without over-stripping or inflaming the skin,’ says Sharon Hilditch, skincare expert and founder of Crystal Clear Skincare (crystalclear.co.uk). ‘For professional acne management, you want to reduce sebum production, clear clogged pores and congestion, inhibit bacterial growth, minimise inflammation, plus support healing and barrier repair,’ says Sharon. ‘Successfully treating acne-prone skin requires patience, precision, and a holistic view of skin health. A layered, professional approach, combining exfoliation, anti-inflammatory treatments, antibacterial support and hydration can produce transformative results.’
Sharon suggests a multi-layered approach to targeting acne, including having the Skinstorm Facial (£350, crystalclear.co.uk), which combines exfoliation and resurfacing chemical peels with salicylic acid, mandelic acid and lactic acid; blue LED light therapy, which helps kill acne-causing bacteria, plus red light to reduce inflammation; this is followed by oxygen therapy to soothe tissue and accelerate healing, followed by a layer of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and ceramides to restore balance and barrier function.
